CHAPTER EIGHT:

“See you next week!” the receptionist called out as Lucy waved goodbye. Everyone had been incredibly warm and welcoming at the therapist’s office, especially Dr. Vasquez. Tall with curly black hair and matching dark eyes and glasses, she exuded a capable warmth that reminded her very much of her sister.

“I’m glad I get to finally meet the elusive Lucy Kane,” Dr. Vasquez had teased, making Lucy blush in embarrassment. As she tried to mumble an excuse, Dr. Vasquez waved it away. “It’s a hard decision to come seek help, Lucy.” Her dark eyes spoke volumes of her sympathy and experience. “Hard but brave.”

As she stepped out into the parking lot, she expected to see Emily’s car. Instead she saw Jamie wearing a casual denim button down with the sleeves rolled up and dark jeans, leaning against a blue pickup truck. Not completely surprised, Lucy raised her eyebrow at the detective. She saw him grin. Her heart skipped a beat at seeing the white smile flash across his dark and handsome features.

She walked towards him, admiring his physique in his plainclothes. She had never seen him out of his work clothes. She had always seen him in slacks and proper button downs, his badge slung casually around his neck. Seeing him in such casual clothes did nothing to diminish his normal sense of authority and presence. It only enhanced it. Even though they were in the city, he seemed more rugged and earthy in his jeans.

“You don’t look too surprised to see me,” Jamie said, feigning a wounded expression. Lucy rolled her eyes.

“I was surprised this morning when you didn’t show up at my door ready to forcibly drag me here,” Lucy said honestly. She really had thought the detective would show up at her doorstep with a pair of ready handcuffs. And secretly, she had been disappointed when he hadn’t.

Jamie nodded. “Ah, well,” he said, a teasing smile pulling at his lips, “I knew your sister would not let you get away a third time. So I felt comfortable knowing you were in good hands this morning.” Jamie laughed as he saw Lucy blush furiously.

Emily had been quite forceful this morning. Lucy nearly had to beg to use the bathroom in private, reminding Emily that there were no windows inside for her to climb out of. She couldn’t blame her for her suspicion of her but it had been quite embarrassing to have Emily march her in to the clinic, arm in arm.

“Well what are you doing here then? You can’t be here to lecture me. I’ve actually gone to the therapist this time,” Lucy said.

Jamie’s eyes twinkled. Although she still looked tired, he could see a lightness in her face that had never been present before. Therapy was helping. He felt his heart loosen in reassurance. She would be okay soon enough.

“I’m sure today was quite taxing. Therapy can do that to you,” he said, smiling understandingly. “So I’m here to take you out to lunch.”

Lucy blinked. Lunch? That was not what she had expected.
